Our Commitment to Fair Trade: (continued) By trading fairly, we support a new kind of economics that places the concerns of small farmers at the center of the business we do. In turn, we receive uniquely crafted coffees produced by farmers who know that we appreciate the attention and care that they devote to growing the finest coffees in the world. It's what we call "relationship coffee" and it's a way for us to show our respect for the people who work to produce excellent and sustainable coffee. Without this work, we all suffer. Without direct relationships with small coffee roasters, small farmers are subject to exploitation by middlemen who pay low and sell high. Without direct relationships, these small farmers are forced to live in poverty. Without Fair Trade we are players in a zero-sum game. When small farmers are forced to choose between cutting their forests to earn a quick dollar to feed their children, and preserving their habitat for the future, they choose their children every time. When these farmers are forced into this kind of decision, they are forced to destroy migratory songbird habitats, incalculable biodiversity, and the indigenous forests that are home to the world's delicious and rare coffees. With Fair Trade we create a new kind of game, a game where coffee farmers are empowered to support their families and communities by producing excellent coffee. This is a game where everyone wins. This is the vision that leads me to the origins of our coffees time after time. I want coffee to improve the lives of all the people who are part of the "coffee supply chain." I want to honor these farmers as the craftspeople that they are. We support the Fair Trade movement as part of our commitment to a sustainable future. Economic justice goes hand-in-hand with social and environmental responsibility and is one of the ways that we express our corporate citizenship.
